Janice Smith Collins
VP, Communications Strategy
My background:
From the time I was a high school yearbook editor, I’ve loved the idea of storytelling. After college I spent some time in editorial and marketing jobs — with a dash of dot-com startup fun — and finally found the sweet spot I was looking for with internal communications. My first challenge was working with geographically dispersed employees who did not have access to email, so we had to be extra creative (and organized!) in the way we communicated with them. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work on lots of projects ranging from building intranets, to executive communications and earnings announcements, to mergers and acquisitions, to major change management, to branding campaigns, to over-the-top events and more. My clients have included Caterpillar, Gateway, Washington Mutual, Yahoo!, Levi Strauss & Co., Southern California Edison and NVIDIA.
I love my job because:
The work we do is really important. What could be better than helping people find greater meaning and purpose in the jobs they do every day?
What inspires me:
My colleagues and clients are creative and really care about what they do. They inspire me to push myself to get better with each new task I take on.
When I'm not working you'll find me:
Most of the time, I’m chasing my one and a half year old daughter around. And occasionally I squeeze in some time to go to the farmer’s market and try a new recipe, or go wine tasting with my husband.
